The Engines
The Campbell Engines
The main station hall is dominated by the two diesel Campbell engines. The two engines are single cylinder , and are situated either side of the main engine hall as a handed pair. Manufactured by the Campbell Gas engine Company of Halifax, the engines are started by compressed air at 210 psi. There are two interconnecting air receivers with original petrol and electric compressors with original switch gear. The engines drive the large 14 inch Blackstone Unchockable pumps via a leather belt. The engines were mainly used during storms and flooding, the electric pumps being used for the everyday pumping.
The engines are in working order are run occasionally on our open days.
